Intergenerational Reading Program

A child's experience of reading with an adult is the magic that makes memories. Few skills are as basic to success in school or life for children.

Through WISE & Healthy Aging's participation in the "America Reads" program volunteers are brought together with children to explore the adventures of reading.

The "America Reads" program was a national challenge launched in 1997 to build a nation of readers. It called on college students and citizens of all ages to work with children to make reading a daily activity and a lifelong habit.

Through this intergenerational reading program, WISE & Healthy Aging is proud to work with children at seven elementary schools, the public library and several after-school sites in Santa Monica.

This corps of volunteers annually helps several hundred children meet state literacy standards and improve their overall school performance.
