If you or a loved one is or soon will be needing long-term care, the following resources may be useful. They offer information ranging from planning for long-term care to residents' rights. Advocacy Organizations
Bet Tzedek Legal Services and its Nursing Home Advocacy Project work to improve the quality of care for elderly in nursing homes and provides legal protection against abuse and neglect through legal advice, education, advocacy and litigation. They have a series of easy-to-use guides such as How to Get Care from a Residential Care Facility, Nursing Home Companion and Assisted Living Companion. These guides can be downloaded from the Nursing Home Advocacy Project website. California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform. Since 1983, the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform has been an advocate for the rights of long-term care residents in California. They help make consumer information readily available, aid residents and their families find legal services, fight elder abuse and support legislation designed to address quality of care and access to long-term care. Their website is in both English and Spanish. Some resources on the site are also available in Chinese. National Citizen’s Coalition for Nursing Home Reform was founded in 1975. It grew out of work first done by advocates working for Ralph Nader and later the National Gray Panthers to support quality care in nursing homes. Advance Health Care Directives
The California Medical Association offers information about advance health care directives. Through their online store, they offer Advance Health Care Directive kits in both English and Spanish. The kit includes the necessary forms, a wallet card and answers frequently asked questions about advance health care directives.
