AARP Tax-Aide Counselors: Become an IRS-certified tax preparer. Help low– and moderate-income seniors and disabled citizens file their federal and state tax returns. Call (310) 394-9871, ext. 450 or email volunteer@wiseandhealthyaging.org

Adult Day Service Center: Help those with memory loss due to Alzheimer’s, stroke, Parkinson’s, or other disease process with activity programs during the day. Play games, help with exercise or art programs, discuss current events, or simply share a quiet conversation. Call (310) 452-7802 for more information.

Advocates for Conserved Elders (ACE): Be a friend to a resident of a residential care facility or nursing home who is under a conservatorship. Provide companionship and an opportunity for socializing by visiting the resident at least twice monthly. Be alert to signs of abuse or neglect and, if such signs are evident, report it to a Los Angeles Superior Court Probate Investigator. America Reads: Through this intergenerational program, help elementary students reading below grade level to meet state literacy standards and improve their overall school performance by service as a volunteer tutor. Congregate Meal Program: Ensure good nutrition for those living independently so they can maintain their health and independence. Help serve a nutritious lunch at one of five centers in Santa Monica. Call (310) 452-7802 for more information.

Daily Money Management: Help maintain independence for those having difficulty managing their daily financial activities due to factors such as failing health and eyesight, memory loss, transportation difficulties, feeling overwhelmed with paperwork. Fraud Fighters: Help protect seniors across the country from being defrauded by con artists. Stay informed about current scams. Telephone consumers at risk and provide them specific and general advice relevant to their situation. Call (310) 394-9871, ext. 441 or email

Friendly Visitors: Help people maintain independence and safety in their homes by contacting them weekly. Decide together how to spend the time. Perhaps chat for an hour, take a walk, go to a favorite store, visit a museum or church, enjoy a restaurant meal. Health Clinic: Volunteer health professionals help provide services, screenings and classes to help clients understand and manage a variety of health factors that impact them. Services include health promotion and disease prevention, breast and cervical cancer screening, mental health services, and information and referral. Volunteers also provide office support services. Information and Referral: Help community members find the resources they need. Deal directly with callers and visitors searching for referrals to community resources available to assist older people. Provide general information about aging and refer them to appropriate programs and services within and outside WISE & Healthy Aging. Peer Counseling: Help maintain mental health of older adults. Paraprofessionals provide counseling to individuals, couples and families and lead support groups for men, women, widows/widowers, and others. Volunteers should be age 55 or older. Administration/ Main Office: Help connect those who contact WISE & Healthy Aging with people who can meet their needs. Answer phones and greet visitors. Refer callers and visitors to appropriate staff within WISE & Healthy Aging. Assist with clerical work as needed, including some data entry. Ombudsman: Advocate for residents of nursing homes and board and cares. Long-term Care Ombudsman volunteers investigate complaints made by or on behalf of residents, actively work to promote the highest quality of care and quality of life for the residents, and protect their rights. Seniors Against Investment Fraud (SAIF): Help protect local seniors from being defrauded by con artists. Make presentations to groups of seniors so they can learn how to identify fraudulent schemes, avoid being victimized, and report fraud when it occurs.
